Cosmetology

Living in a very image driven world, self image has grown to become one of the top aspects people now a days are focused on. For example, many women pamper themselves to massages, get their nails or toes done, have their hair done and eye brows waxed. Even men have started spending more money on their appearance by getting their bodies waxed, getting fancy haircuts and even pedicures! There are many professions out there where you do the same thing day in and day out and nothing changes. Fortunately, there are jobs where you can be a critical thinker and express yourself as an individual. As a cosmetologist, you have the ability to structure your day as you see fit. You have the freedom to express your artistic abilities, become a critical thinker and make your day as exciting or as repetitive as you want it to be.

When attending training classes or school for cosmetology, you will find that cosmetologists are often defined as being an artist. They are the ones who ultimately create the image the client is going for through their make-up, hair, nails or skin. As the artist, you will guide the client in making a decision on their new look. Your professors will teach you how to explain to the client the do’s and don’ts of hair and makeup and what will work with and accentuate their unique features. As a cosmetologist, you may have a difficult job of dealing with stubborn clients. Many clients have a particular image of the look they want and if you know it will not fit their face, you may have to convince them otherwise. Also, if they don’t bring in a picture for explanation, you have to visualize what they want by their verbal description only.

To become a cosmetologist, you must receive your license from a career school or program in which you will learn the fundamentals of hair, skin, makeup, nail, customer care, etc. You have the opportunity to select what area you want to focus on, however, the more areas you study the greater chance you have at finding a job. Becoming licensed in more than one area will make you more versatile and give you a better chance of being hired. Other requirements vary from state to state. Some states expect you to complete an apprenticeship as a substitute for graduation from school. Those that apply for their license though are usually required to complete a written test as well as a demonstration of their abilities and skills. When you start working at your new place of employment, you will notice that many of the salons have a level system based on your experience level. You are expected to have so many years of experience performing different skills before you can advance and earn a higher pay.

With a career in cosmetology you have the opportunity to choose what area you would like to work in: including hair stylist, barber, electrolysis technician and nail technician. Many cosmetologists also choose careers in the beauty industry as a beauty magazine editor or consultant, while others become sales or marketing specialists in the cosmetic industry. Hair stylists not only cut and color hair, but they can style it, curl it and perform hair and scalp analysis to ensure their client’s hair is healthy. Nail technicians not only give manicures and pedicures, but they also pay attention to the health of nails, nail growth and cuticles. Some salons offer hand massages with a skin softening oil, clean up of hang nails or cuticles and acrylic/fiber glass nails. Electrolysis is a way of removing individual hairs from the face or body. Today's medical electrolysis devices destroy the growth center of the hair with chemical or heat energy. A very fine probe is inserted into the hair follicle at the surface of the skin. The hair is then removed harmlessly with forceps.
