Health Information Technology Program Overview
Earn your online associate degree in Health Information Technology from American Institute College of Health Professions. This program is delivered using a blended online format that includes a variety of simulated labratory activities. The Health Information Technology program teaches the skills needed to pursue an entry-level career as a health information technician in a variety of settings such as hospitals, clinics, physician offices, healthcare agencies and others.
Students complete coursework which includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health data requirements and standards, clinical classification and coding systems, data analysis, healthcare reimbursement methods, data and quality management, along with foundational courses such as algebra, psychology and sociology.
Nature of the Work
Health Information Technicians assemble patients' health information including medical history, symptoms, examination results, diagnostic tests, treatment methods, and all other healthcare provider services. Technicians organize and manage health information data by ensuring its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security. These processes allow graduates to play a vital role in the health care process by making accurate, updated information available to health care providers, thus ensuring a high quality of patient care.
Health Information Technicians work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, physicians offices, healthcare agencies, and insurance and managed care providers, among others.
According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-11 Edition, “Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 20 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations through 2018. Employment growth will result from the increase in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be performed.” *
