5 Networking Tips

Social and Business Networking

From http://incitrio.wordpress.com

Networking is a great tool for developing business and social relationships.  Building rapport with potential future employers, clients, colleagues and affiliates will not only help you land a great job after you have completed your education but also increase your chances of being promoted, earning raises and being successful in your future.  Here are five great tips to help you network yourself to the best of your ability.

  1.  Get Involved – Attend social events, business meetings and parties where you may run into people in your industry.  Join organizations that are related to your field of work.  For example, if you are studying to be a medical assistant, you could join the American Association of Medical Assistants
  2. Be Prepared – Before you attend any social gatherings, do your research.  Find out how the event or organization will be beneficial to you.  Also, make sure you have personal business cards to give to people you meet so they will better remember you.  Your business cards should include your name, address, phone number(s), email address and business logo or slogan if you have one.
  3. Create a Pitch – Before you meet new people, prepare a short 15-30 second pitch about yourself.  Your pitch should be an introduction of yourself and explain what you can do for that contact now or in the future.  When you are presenting your pitch to a new contact, avoid “selling yourself”.
  4. Ask Questions and Be Assertive – While you are mingling with new contacts, ask them questions about their business so you can better determine what you can do for them.  Don’t wait for people to approach you.  Introduce yourself to new faces and do not spend too much time networking with people you already know.
  5. Be Professional – Social events such as parties are bound to have alcohol but if you are there to network yourself, you should watch your alcohol intake and behavior since you are there to represent and present an image of yourself.   Be sure to avoid asking new contacts for favors such as aiding you in getting a job.  Instead, ask for information and tips.

Making contacts is one of the first steps on your path to professional success.  The first step is gaining your education and you can find your perfect career school now on Americolleges.com!

Tweet your Personal Brand

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Ever think that Twitter, the newest social networking site, could help promote your personal brand or market your career?  According to an article on Boston.com, you can, with the help of do’s and don’ts to use while networking with people, industry news and events.

  1.  Use the advanced search tool to track what people are tweeting about in your industry.  For example, if you just graduated from a career school you found on Americolleges.com with a degree in nursing, you could search for hospitals, doctors or nursing homes.
  2. Tweet with your peers directly about your latest career developments and accomplishments.
  3. Create a link on your Twitter page to your LinkedIN page.
  4. Use the hash tag for industry events or networking opportunities you are participating in.
  5. Favorite positive Tweets.
  6. Avoid controversial or political arguments.
  7. Never talk negatively about colleagues, employers or competitors.
  8. Don’t tweet something negative that you wouldn’t want a future employer, boss or HR person to see.

Who would have thought that Twitter could help you brand yourself and help you find the job of your dreams?  I would recommend building your Twitter page now while you are beginning your search for a school, enrolling in school and starting your education.

Best Jobs for 2010

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

If you are still unsure as to what program you want to study, one factor you may want to consider is what jobs are projected to be the best careers in 2010.  Turns out, that careers in the medical and computer technology field are on the rise.  Job openings in the medical industry are greatly increasing as baby boomers retire.  One of the benefits of starting a career in the health care field is the variety of jobs available.  Careers include medical assisting, occupational therapy, ultrasound technology, nursing, pharmacy, dental assisting and respiratory care.  Another career in the field that is in high demand is geriatrics, or the care of elderly adults.  Geriatric nurses work with senior citizens who need special attention and care.  They can work in a nursing or retirement home or provide home health care.

Since technology is constantly changing and advancing, jobs in the computer technology industry are expected to continue increasing over the next year.  Careers in this field include computer repair, database management, network administration and computer tech support.  One career that is trending to be hot in 2010 is software engineering.  Software engineering is the application of a systematic approach to the development and operation of software.  Software engineers can work for businesses or government agencies or be their own boss as a freelancer.

Americolleges.com lists hundreds of schools that offer programs in the above mentioned careers. Even if you don’t want to start a career in the medical or computer technology field, take the time to browse the website and maybe you will find a program specially designed for you!

Job vs Career

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

A job should be more than something you have to do just to pay the bills.  You have to earn a living  but you should also be truly passionate about what you do.  You can usually leave a drab job and start another one without feeling too much regret or care.  People tend to have jobs when they’re younger as opposed to having a career when they’re older.  A career is something more rewarding.  People usually have careers in areas and industries they enjoy, like health care, technology and creative fields. People are drawn to their careers.  A career works towards lifelong goals.  It’s more fulfilling and is a part of who you are since you probably consider your likes and dislikes when choosing it.  A career works in tandem with your personality type and coincides with your abilities and capacities.  If you’re ready to embark on your life career, check out Americolleges.com, the nationwide college directory.  It will help you choose a career program (like fashion design, dental assisting and accounting) and gear you towards the technical schools that provide these programs.  You’ll gain the education you need, graduate with a degree or certificate and start your new career. Americolleges is definitely the place to start your dream career!
