5 Networking Tips

Social and Business Networking

From http://incitrio.wordpress.com

Networking is a great tool for developing business and social relationships.  Building rapport with potential future employers, clients, colleagues and affiliates will not only help you land a great job after you have completed your education but also increase your chances of being promoted, earning raises and being successful in your future.  Here are five great tips to help you network yourself to the best of your ability.

  1.  Get Involved – Attend social events, business meetings and parties where you may run into people in your industry.  Join organizations that are related to your field of work.  For example, if you are studying to be a medical assistant, you could join the American Association of Medical Assistants
  2. Be Prepared – Before you attend any social gatherings, do your research.  Find out how the event or organization will be beneficial to you.  Also, make sure you have personal business cards to give to people you meet so they will better remember you.  Your business cards should include your name, address, phone number(s), email address and business logo or slogan if you have one.
  3. Create a Pitch – Before you meet new people, prepare a short 15-30 second pitch about yourself.  Your pitch should be an introduction of yourself and explain what you can do for that contact now or in the future.  When you are presenting your pitch to a new contact, avoid “selling yourself”.
  4. Ask Questions and Be Assertive – While you are mingling with new contacts, ask them questions about their business so you can better determine what you can do for them.  Don’t wait for people to approach you.  Introduce yourself to new faces and do not spend too much time networking with people you already know.
  5. Be Professional – Social events such as parties are bound to have alcohol but if you are there to network yourself, you should watch your alcohol intake and behavior since you are there to represent and present an image of yourself.   Be sure to avoid asking new contacts for favors such as aiding you in getting a job.  Instead, ask for information and tips.

Making contacts is one of the first steps on your path to professional success.  The first step is gaining your education and you can find your perfect career school now on Americolleges.com!
