Job Benefits After Graduation

Entering the real world after graduation can be a big eye opener and sometimes a bit of a shock. How do you decide what job will be right for you? Will it be a job you stay with for a long period of time or is it a stepping stone to lead into other companies down the road? Is the company going to help you, while you help and learn from them? Starting your career post graduation is a big step in one’s life which is why it is important to not only understand your job description but understand the benefits you should receive as an employee.

As a student you are given the option of being insured because you can be accounted for under your parent’s insurance plan. A key benefit when working for a company is seeing if they provide you with medical and/or dental insurance. Most companies plan to hire their employees for a long period of time. By providing a potential employee with the opportunity of receiving health benefits, it gives the applicant the feeling that the company really cares about their employees. Most Americans have health insurance through their employers, yet employment is no longer a guarantee of health insurance coverage. As America continues to move from a manufacturing-based economy to a service economy and employee
working patterns continue to evolve, health insurance coverage has become less stable.

Due to rising health insurance premiums, many small employers cannot afford to offer health benefits. Companies that do offer health insurance, often require employees to contribute a larger share from their paychecks towards their coverage. As a result, an increasing number of Americans have opted not to take advantage of job-based health insurance because they cannot afford it.

There are many different ways a job can offer benefits, such as being a full-time employee, maternity or personal leave, paid time off or vacation, workman’s compensation, unemployment, etc. Each job may have a different requirement in order to qualify for those benefits. However, receiving those benefits is a great opportunity for you and one day maybe your family. In the US, to receive the benefits for working full time you must be a permanent employee; not seasonal or a temp. By working full time in the US, you are required to work 32-40 hours in a given week. This way, the company knows how to separate those who aren’t there as much from those using this as their career.

Some companies give you the opportunity to be compensated by pay or giving you time off. Paid Time Off, or PTO, is another benefit some companies may offer in order to give back to their employees for the time they put in each day. PTO is when you have worked so many days without showing up late, calling in sick, etc. and each day is accumulates into so many hours they can give you. After you have accumulated enough hours, you have the ability to request to use them by requesting how many days you will be gone and how many of them you want to use as PTO days. Vacation is another benefit that some of the companies may offer you, however along with the PTO it may come as a limited availability based on their decision. Some companies may offer paid vacation only to full time employees or only after the 3-6 month probationary period.

An important benefit that would be a great additive would be 401k because it helps you plan for your future. Being able to put money aside for you when you plan to retire, granted you’re just starting out, will end up becoming a smart move for you in the long run. The biggest advice with jobs is you always want to plan for the future; will this job help me advance within the company or at least with experience to take elsewhere, will the job give me the benefits I deserve for the work I am putting in, etc? By asking these key factors it will help you decide if the job is a good fit for you.
